Review summary

VINCI submitted its act4nature commitments and its 2023 Universal Registration Document to the It’s Now for Nature campaign and met all the review criteria to take part into the campaign.

Reviewed November 2024

  • VINCI’s double materiality assessment addresses nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities across the value chain.
  • Dependencies on biodiversity: VINCI’s operations depend on natural resources, especially in the upstream value chain. Water consumption for material and equipment production, as well as wood for construction, are significant dependencies.
  • Impacts on biodiversity: VINCI’s activities impact nature in various ways; including contributing to climate change, habitat destruction and fragmentation and water withdrawals.
  • Risks: expansion of areas of water stress, pollution of ecosystems (air, water, soil, noise and light pollution), damage to and destruction of species, soil depletion, erosion, degradation and loss of natural land.
  • Opportunities: Brownfield regeneration, ecological restoration, waste reduction and recycling.

  • VINCI has SMART targets for nature with a deadline of 2030. By 2030, VINCI pledges to:
    • prevent pollution and incidents by systematically implementing an environmental management plan in all businesses;
    • optimize water consumption, especially in areas of water stress;
    • aim to achieve no net loss of biodiversity.
  • VINCI also has made some specific commitments for biodiversity in its act4nature commitments with different timelines:
    • Strengthen biodiversity governance
    • Improve knowledge
    • Reduce the pressures of their activities on biodiversity
    • Develop their capacity to restore natural environments and support our customers
  • For example: By 2030, for its Construction Major Projects Division, VINCI is committing to produce a mapping of sites located in areas of high to very high-water stress and reduce its water withdrawals and use (100% of projects on the Major Projects Division).
  • Another example, VINCI is committing to stop using phytosanitary products by 2030.
  • Another example, VINCI is committed to develop its ecological engineering and urban heat island solutions by integrating its standards of respect for the natural environment during construction by 2027.

  • VINCI has concrete actions and measurable objectives for each of its SMART targets under their act4nature commitments.
  • Concrete actions are tailored to mitigate risks and prevent serious impacts on VINCI’s operations and among suppliers, for example:
    • Mitigating and adapting to climate change

    • Raw material conservation and waste reduction, recycling and reuse

    • Preserving natural environments

    • Publication of a practical guide on responsible purchasing

  • VINCI’s act4nature commitments are signed by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
  • All actions taken to deliver on VINCI’s environmental ambition are founded on the commitments embraced by the Group’s Executive Committee, which the Group’s Vice-President for the Environment has been a member since April 2022. These commitments are taken up by each business line in three priority areas: acting for the climate, optimizing resources thanks to the circular economy and preserving natural environments.
