Review summary

Arauco submitted its nature strategy and its 2023 integrated report to the It’s Now for Nature campaign and met all the review criteria to be part of the campaign.

Reviewed September 2024

  • Arauco’s strategy is based on assessing the impacts and dependencies of it’s forest and plantations.
  • Forestry and industrial operations are constantly evaluated to minimize environmental impacts, including emissions, water management, and ecosystem conservation.
  • Climate change and biodiversity are key to long-term success, driving innovation to mitigate risks and harness opportunities. The strategy emphasizes product diversification, low-emission technologies, and ecosystem conservation and restoration.

  • Arauco has SMART targets with a deadline of 2050 focusing on preserving habitats and genetic diversity for threatened species, enhancing ecosystem resilience, and managing risks like wildfires and invasive species.
  • For example:
    • Restore 25,000 hectares of native forest to 2050 and maintain the percentage of certified assets above 95% under responsible forest management.
    • Maintain and expand a network of 157 High Conservation Value Areas that cover 135,000 hectares; conduct and inventory of the natural capital that is within the forest land in Chile by 2024; and protect 1,234 species on the IUCN Red List and National Conservation Lists that are present in our local habitats.

  • Arauco has concrete actions to meet its targets. At Arauco, High Conservation Value Areas (HCVAs) aim to protect key features such as threatened species, large forest cores, and rare ecosystems, as well as essential services such as water and community needs.
  • The company identifies, manages, and monitors HCVAs, employing assessment and targeted practices to enhance these values and regularly improving its monitoring and communication protocols.

  • The Sustainability Committee led by the Executive Vice President and General Manager, oversees long-term economic, social, and environmental management. They meet monthly to review progress.
  • The Climate Change Committee, an interdisciplinary body at the management level coordinates, sets objectives, and oversees the climate agenda, focusing on three main areas: climate mitigation, ecosystems and biodiversity, and circular bioeconomy
  • The nature strategy has been signed off by Arauco’s VP.
