TenneT

  • Sector: Energy and Utilities
  • Headquarters: Netherlands

Review summary

TenneT submitted its Nature Ambition 2030 and Integrated Annual Report to the It’s Now for Nature campaign and met all the review criteria to take part into the campaign.

  • TenneT conducted a double materiality assessment to evaluate impacts, risks and opportunities across the value chain.
  • Material topics: Climate change; Biodiversity and ecosystems (occupying areas of land and seabed, disturbing species); Resource use and circular economy.
  • Impacts (for example): TenneT procures assets that require materials originating from virgin sources, which depletes resources and negatively affects resource efficiency.

  • TenneT has set SMART targets for their material nature topics with varying deadlines of 2030 and 2045.

For example:

  • Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 95% and reduce scope 3 category 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 30% by 2030 (from 2019 baseline)
  • No net loss of biodiversity by 2030 (compared to a 2025 baseline). Strive for net gain in:
    • Onshore: nature-inclusive as the standard for new substation designs
    • Offshore: nature positive for newly initiated 2GW projects

  • TenneT’s actions are in line with the mitigation hierarchy.

For example:

  • Decarbonization: Address long-term leakage risks from ageing infrastructure by replacing SF₆ (a greenhouse gas) with greener alternative gases in electrical equipment.
  • Biodiversity and ecosystems:
  • Avoid locating infrastructure in or near biodiversity-sensitive areas;
  • Ensure that transport routes do not disturb nature;
  • Focus on reducing disturbance (underwater noise and shipping) for offshore projects
  • Circularity: Expand the relative inflow of non-virgin materials, specifically copper and steel, by securing new supplier contracts

  • TenneT’s Nature Ambition 2030 was approved by the Executive Board.
  • The material topics (including impacts, risks and opportunities) fall under the responsibility of Executive Board (CEO, COO, CFO)
